Fat Loss Revealed (Part 2)

By Yuri Elkaim The secrets to achieving the lean athletic physique that youve always wanted are held by Canadas top trainer, Yuri Elkaim. Most people waste a lot of time in the gym with no real direction or positive results. Fitness and wellness coaches, such as Yuri Elkaim know there is a better way. Yuri is a former professional soccer, Certified Kinesiologist, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the nationally ranked University of Toronto mens soccer program, and considered by many as Canadas top trainer and fitness expert. Hes created Fitter U, the worlds only 12-week body shaping fitness program for iPod/MP3 players geared to helping people lose weight, burn fat, and improve their fitness level. In this article, Amy Coates, Total Wellness Consultings nutrition expert will be interviewing Yuri on various facets of weight loss. continued from Part 1. AC: So for beginners, a good nutrition program is possibly the most powerful factor? YE: Absolutely! Obviously a nutrition program is vital you must create a caloric deficit through a combined exercise and nutrition approach. But, more so I like to focus on getting my clients to focus on eating healthier, higher quality foods. I like to preach the qualitative side of nutrition more so than the quantitative calorie counting side. So the key for the fat loss programs I use is exactly that how can we force the body to burn as many calories as possible, and continue to burn them between workouts. The idea is to demand as much work from the body as possible and maintain that caloric burn for as long as possible. Now the ONLY reason the body burns calories is because the muscle tissue is working. It doesnt matter what activity you are involved in aerobics or weight training its muscular demand that determines caloric burn. So you have to begin with that in mind. Lets think about this: You can run a mile in ten minutes. You can swim a mile in twenty minutes. After a year of swimming every day and not running you can now swim a mile in 16 minutes. Without running how much has your running improved? Very little. Why? We only have ONE cardiovascular system so why doesnt improving your swimming (and cardio system) automatically improve your running? Because the ONLY reason your cardio system was involved in the first place was because of demand from your muscular system. So you adapted to the SPECIFIC MUSCULAR demands of swimming which by default then involves the cardiovascular system its not the other way around as most people think. The muscles dont move because of cardiovascular demand the cardio system is elevated because of muscular demand. AC: Whats the takeaway message? YE: Hopefully the readers can understand that we need to program the body based on the movements its going to perform not based on the cardiovascular system. Thats an upside down method. AC: So what methods work for fat loss? What methods are ineffective or inefficient for fat loss? YE: Circuit weight training and interval training always work. Steady state aerobic work never works long term in the real world. Now for those of you out there who will no doubt get caught up talking about health, cardiac heart disease, cholesterol etc - I’m not arguing with you. But were talking about fat loss here. However - for fat loss, the research is unequivocal - high intensity work is superior. I think the problem is this: Aerobic training by nature is lower intensity. At some point you get so good at it that it just doesn’t burn as many calories, and in effect, you are burning fewer calories than you used to for the same time investment. So what do you do? Go for longer and inevitably run into the same problem? Or increase the intensity? Increasing the intensity is the obvious answer. AC: You have commented that aerobics were useless for fat loss. This caused a lot of controversy. What did you mean? YE: I’m sure you’ll agree Amy that it only seemed to cause controversy with people who don’t do this for a living. Most of the good practitioners in this area didn’t even blink. It’s not controversial at all in terms of fat loss and I’m getting bored going over it. I don’t think anyone who has trained themselves or anyone else has ever seen low intensity cardio to be a very effective fat loss tool. The loss in lean mass that is typical in most weight loss programs needs to be offset - and steady state aerobic training (despite it’s plentiful health benefits) only adds to that problem. So let me expand on what I meant: When I said “Aerobics are useless for fat loss” what I meant was “aerobics are useless for fat loss”. Is that clearer? Ok - to be less antagonistic, let’s just say that aerobic training for fat loss is the most overrated and overemphasized method in use today. It’s completely outdated as a fat loss modality. Here’s something to remember write it on your fridge it you have to: Lifting weights in the intensity zone of 8-12 reps coupled with short rest periods has been shown beneficial for releasing the androgenic hormone testosterone and growth hormone. These important hormones encourage development of lean muscle mass (metabolically active tissue). Fat, on the other hand is just along for the ride! Aerobic exercise has been linked with the release of the catabolic hormone cortisol, which is antagonistic to the development of lean muscle mass. The efficiency argument is interesting. Does weight training build muscle? No. It breaks down muscle and the body ADAPTS by building more muscle. So in aerobic training - when we “encourage the use of fat” - do we force that same body to adapt by storing more fat? Interesting, most exercise and fitness experts all seem to think so. Think about it for a moment. Who is leaner and more defineda 100m sprinter or marathon runner??? Seriously - there are thousands of overweight individuals each year who complete marathons. Now completing a marathon is damn impressive to me. However it shows that the aerobic fitness needed to complete a marathon doesn’t have anything necessarily to do with creating a fat loss effect. So if you are capable of two to three hours of steady state running and still not be burning enough fat - we can either go to a higher intensity or you can try four hours of running. Any takers for the latter? In terms of fat loss - calories burned are the most important factor. And aerobic training burns less calories than anaerobic training and weight training overall (besides doing very little to increase your metabolism -your body’s calorie burning engine). So if we accept that lean mass is a major factor in your fat burning engine - and aerobic training makes that engine smaller (i.e. less muscle) and more efficient at burning fat (remember more efficient means it burns LESS) - how can having a smaller more efficient fat burning machine burn more fat? It doesn’t. AC: So you are saying that cardio is the least important component? YE: I don’t think so necessarily. However, I do believe that a combination of properly structure strength training accompanied by high-intensity interval training is the MOST effective way to burn fat while promoting lean muscle mass. The results speak for themselves, time and time again! How To Choose Your Career - A Little Like Choosing Your Life’s Partner

By Robin Henry Introduction - Case Study When my daughter Meredith (in her late twenties) asked me about starting up a boutique recently, the best advice I could give her was to say nothing. I must admit that I didn’t really remember what a boutique was. Sure, I knew it was a shop, but the exact type of shop eluded me. So instead of embarassing myself by letting her know that her infallible, omniscient father really isn’t the fountain of all wisdom as she thinks, I searched the Internet for a suitable source of information. (Ain’t the net grand?) I eventually bought her an ebook titled, “FabJob Guide to Become a Boutique Owner” written by Debbra Mikaelsen, who has, according to the book, “been a fashion industry consultant for the last eight years, and has been working in fashion design and production since 1986.” Her, and a contributing author, Pamela Skillings have much more expertise than I have in the area and have written 226 pages of invaluable information that can be downloaded immediately. I quickly read the ebook to make sure it was as good as I had been led to believe it was and emailed it to my daughter. I asked her to read it and discuss her options and any questions with me. Naturally, my daughter was grateful and my status as father-hero continues …. More importantly, the ebook contained some critically useful information that helped my daughter move her mindset from the supposedly glamorous aspects of owning one’s business, to some of the realities associated with cash flow, fixed costs and the rate of business failures. The ebook contains much too much invaluable information to list here, but to give you a general idea about how thorough it is, here’s a glimpse: 1. The Boutique Environment 2. Planning Your Boutique (Including a section on business planning) 3. Preparing to Open (All about location and inventory acquisition) 4. Running Your Boutique (Merchandising, staff management, sales techniques and more) The title also contains example start-up budgeting information, inventory control documents, staff schedules, advice about customer files and setting up a website for your business. All well written, sensible, useful information for anyone wanting to start up a boutique, or in fact, any retail business. We were both impressed with the FabJob Guide and my daughter is now writing up a plan that will see her open her shop in November 2007. During the lead up, she plans to get some hands-on retail experience and do some statistical research about the demographics etc of the area in which we live. She now has a much better understanding of business ownership. She understands now the reality of boutique shop ownership as opposed to the dreams of huge sales and wealth. We need to take the same effort to choose our careers as we do our life’s partner as either could last 30, 40 or 50 years. My advice is to: do your research; don’t pair up with the first one you find; if possible, try before you commit; when you have decided, commit fully and keep in touch with new developments. Of course, in a career, it’s handy to have skills and knowledge that allow some latitude to move within several similar careers. For most of us, more than one life partner at a time isn’t an option. When you do your career research … and you must do it if you care about your happiness, I highly recommend you include the appropriate FabJob Guide in your research. So You Think You’re a Christian

By Ray Burton What could be more tragic than finding out on Judgment Day that you were not in fact a Christian when all through life you had thought you were? This will be a terrible reality for many, many people. Matt7:13-15. Will it happen to you? In this article I will highlight some of the misconceptions that can arise and deceive you. First of all, what is a Christian? The simplest definition is, “a follower of Christ”. However, while that is true, it is much too broad to deal with the “tragedy” under consideration. I will therefore narrow down our consideration to “your personal day of judgment and its outcome”. Refer Heb 9:27. Only God knows your heart, your history and every factor regarding your life. Therefore no man can judge you in this regard. However, God has made a number of things very clear in the Bible that you must heed if His decision about you on “your judgment day” is be in your favor. Let’s take a look at some misconceptions first of all. I’m a good person The most common would be, “I’m a good person, I’ve never done anyone any harm”. Or similarly, “I’m a good person, I’ve always done good things for my fellowman”. While moral values and good works are indeed virtues to be applauded, that is not God’s criteria for whether you’ll spend eternity with Him. These “moral values and good works” can even be quite religious and include speaking prophetically, delivering people of evil spirits and working miracles. However if this is your only basis for your eternal salvation and being a Christian, then the Lord will say, “I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.” Refer to Matt 7:22-23. There will be no bartering or negotiating. The important point here is that it is the Lord who has the last word. After all, He is the Judge! His judgments will be by His standards and not yours. We have a tendency to want to play God in life because of the gift He gave us called freedom of choice, which is often lead by selfish desires for power or some other personal desire. This freedom allows you to do good and practice good works to others. However when you believe that our perceived goodness is good enough for your eternal destiny, you will in fact find it will always fall a long way short of the perfect standards of a holy and pure God. Which is the reason He sent His son Jesus to be our savior. Can you begin to see the seriousness of the situation and your need to get a full understanding of the truth? I’m from a Christian home. I go to church Let’s look at another misconception. Many believe because they grew up in a Christian home and have always gone to church, that they’re “OK” with God and their eternity is going to be a good one with Him. But is that what the Bible teaches us? Definitely not. A very religious man during the time Jesus walked the earth, who went to the same temple as Jesus, was a teacher in that temple and carefully practiced every aspect of the law, once had a similar conversation with Jesus. You can find it in John 3:1-12. Let’s take a look at it. The man, named Nicodemus, was a Pharisee and he approached Jesus by night. He said he understood that Jesus was a teacher sent by God because of the signs he had done. Jesus responded however by beginning to direct Nicodemus to the truth of the kingdom of God. His words, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”, have now become famous and have been spoken multitudes of times in an effort to bring man to the point of salvation. Nicodemus however began to question the possibility of man being born again. He confused the spiritual birth Jesus was referring to with physical birth. Jesus then clearly elaborates the need for the Holy Spirit to do a work of new birth within a person, mentioning the Spirit 3 times in the following 4 verses. However, Nicodemus continues to question and asks, “How can these things be?” Jesus responded by giving Nicodemus a gentle chastisement for being a teacher while not understanding this most important truth. The outcome however, even with teaching directly from Jesus and the insight he gained, was that Nicodemus still needed to be born again! You must understand Jesus was leading Nicodemus to a place he had not yet reached. Just like Nicodemus you can have a very religious background and experience of going to church, mass, baptism (infant or adult), confirmation, communion and prayers, raised in a Christian home yet still miss out on a personal level on “your personal day of judgment”. When you take away religion with all its traditions, pomp and ceremony, is there a personal relationship with God left? That is what matters. The account of Nicodemus also shows us that it doesn’t matter how studious and qualified you are, the need remains the same: to be born again. I pray The disciples asked Jesus about prayer and He taught them the Lord’s prayer. This begins, “Our Father who art in heaven……” The question that matters is, “Is He your Father?” The act of praying does not make Him so, until that becomes your first prayer! Remember that prayer is simply talking to God. If we talk to a king on earth we don’t suddenly become princes or princesses, so it is with God. Just talking to Him does not make you a child of God, until you respond to Him and ask Him to make you so. I believe in God So does the devil! The main questions here are what and how do you believe? If your belief stops at the acknowledgment that He exists then what benefit is that to you on your personal day of judgment? Jesus said, “I said therefore to you, that you shall die in your your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins.” Refer John 8:24. We need to understand what Jesus meant when He said, ‘I am He’. The context was in a conversation about His coming down from heaven as the sent One out of His love relationship with His Father who He desired to please. Jesus went on to say to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He…” and later in that passage, “If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”. The whole emphasis is on relationships and abiding in them. It is from a believing relationship with God, that you come into freedom. This is much deeper than mere acknowledgment. I’ve been baptized Why? Baptism is an act of obedience for believers following repentance. A spiritual act which God requires of us and essential to living a victorious Christian life. However, if the act was done out of a religious, church or family tradition without any repentance or relationship first, its value will be worthless on your, ‘personal day of judgment’. This view point is seen clearly in the dialog of John the Baptist himself. Refer Matt3:8 Speaking to the Pharisees and Sadducees who were coming for baptism he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bring forth fruit in keeping with your repentance….” Clearly John believed baptism was a matter of the heart and repentance and not some religious act. I’ve been confirmed Confirmation is a Christian rite that follows baptism. It was defined by Augustine as a “visible word” or an “outward sign of an inward and spiritual grace.” Many churches have variations on this rite which is meant to lead to receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands. While all this maybe very religious and to a certain degree scriptural, the issue is were you a believer when this took place? If not, it is meaningless and certainly will not be of any value on your “personal day of judgment.” It is difficult to give a supporting scripture on this view because this rite only came about in the Middle Ages, although the laying on of hands was a practice of the early church. The point is that it has nothing to do with salvation and your eternal destiny. It is only related to the belief structures of your church, your personal expression of faith and in some cases a measure of power to work while you are on this earth. I have Christian parents Rather like the second point a serious misconception is that because a person’s parents are Christians they too will be saved on their “personal day of judgement.” Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth tells us,”For we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, whether good or bad.” Refer 2Cor5:10 This is clearly a personal matter not a family matter! I have a Christian spouse Exactly the same principle applies here to that of coming from a Christian family. You will be judged on your own merits. It is being a part of the bride of Christ, not the bride or groom of anyone else that will give you salvation on your personal judgement day. This requires that you repent and not rely on the repentance of anyone else. The whole weight of scripture is based on your personal relationship to God, personal choices, personal motivations and judgments and not that of your spouse, partner, children or any other relationship. Hebs 9:27 …it is destined that men die only once, and after that comes the judgment…. I went to Sunday School Going to Sunday School or a Christian School was a tremendous blessing for you, but where did it get you? These places where to, “train you up in the way you should go” Refer Prov22:6 They were not the destination or the vehicle themselves. They were meant to teach you values and direction. They were also hopefully meant to direct you to Jesus, the one in who there is eternal life, if you accept and receive Him. I went to a Christian school This is exactly the same point as the previous one. Did you research the scriptures for yourself and decide to repent and put your faith in Jesus resulting in a heart relationship with Him, or did you simply intellectually accept or reject it? I give money to charities and good causes The Bible has a lot to say about money, not trusting in it, the importance of giving, tithing and God’s provision. Nowhere however does it ever say or imply that you can directly or indirectly buy your way into heaven. Central to the gospel message is that Jesus was sent to us freely, but at a huge price to God, the sacrificial death of Jesus for our sins. No amount of money could ever replace the cost of Jesus the Son of God. In fact it would be deeply offensive to God if you would consider any aspect of your relationship or destiny with Him could be purchased with money or the giving of it to others. An good illustration is found in Acts8:14-24. In this account The apostles were in Samaria praying for the new believers to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. However a new believer named Simon offered Peter money to have the same authority they had shown. Peter’s response was, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.” Peter didn’t pull his punches. He spoke about the central issue; the heart of Simon. I’ve never done anything that’s seriously wrong Do you think that because you have never committed murder, rape or any serious crime or theft, that you are good enough to go into the presence of a holy and pure God? I may never of met you, but I can assure you that without a doubt the answer is no. How can I be so sure? Simply because God the Father sent his Son Jesus to die in your place so that you would be able to enter into His presence! Do you think that would of happened if it was not necessary? Think about that for a moment. Why would the Son of God hang on a cross for your eternal salvation if He didn’t need to? Just in case you think you might be an exception to this requirement, let’s take a look at Roms3:22-23. It clearly says,”…even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. The good news however is in the following verse which says,”being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;….” I am a pillar of society and respected by many By following the teachings of Jesus and scripture it is very possible and likely that you will achieve success in the secular world. This may have resulted in a great deal of respect and stature by your peers. This is something that glorifies God. However the benefit of this respect for you is a totally temporal thing. It has no eternal value. You will be rewarded for the good deeds you have done in obedience to Christ, if you enter into eternity based on a relationship of repentance and faith in Him. Your good works however will profit you nothing if you do not enter into an eternity with Him because you never had that relationship. The issue that matters What then are the issues relating to your, “personal judgment day and its outcome”? There is only one issue: How did you respond to God’s love expressed in the giving of His Son Jesus? Before we look at response, we need to look at Jesus. Here’s a simple outline of the life of Jesus. God created man for communion with himself. Man however was rebellious and disobeyed God, resulting in sin. This caused a separation to take place and man was no longer able to have an intimate relationship with God. Man’s corrupt and fallen state could not enter into the presence of a pure and holy God. Because of His love for mankind, God desired to change things. However His perfect moral justice would not allow man’s disobedience to go unpunished. That’s primarily where Jesus steps into the picture, at least as far as human history goes. God sent His Son Jesus to pay the price of man’s sin. John records it in his gospel by saying, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through Him. Refer John 3:16-17 Because Jesus was a perfect sinless sacrifice, the justice of God was met. However that does not mean that you will all go to heaven as an outcome, on “your personal day of judgment”. As I said earlier it all depends on our response to this incredible expression of His love for us. So what will He be looking for in your response? Our response He will look for faith and repentance. Both of these are required for you to be “born again” and also to walk in your salvation. Let’s take a brief look at these in relation to “your personal judgment day”. Whether or not we get into heaven and spend eternity with God depends on whether we have been born again with a saving faith. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians wrote, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast. Refer Eph 2:8-9. This faith means believing and receiving the gift of Jesus on a personal level into your heart. Faith is belief in action. It is, “Calling upon the name of the Lord” refer Romans 10:13, it’s “receiving the gifts of grace and righteousness” refer Roms 5:17, and it is “confessing with your lips what you believe in your heart” Refer Romans 10:9-10. Repentance is acknowledging your need for salvation because you are heading in the wrong direction and turning from it by humbly expressing yourself and that need to God. Faith and repentance on these levels determine your eternal destiny. However both are also actively required in your continued walk of salvation with the Lord. You must never have the attitude that since you are saved you can do whatever you like. That is to have an unrepentant heart. You must always walk by faith for that is what pleases God and enables you to live in the fullness of life by His Spirit. Your walk in life The important thing in regard to the “tragedy” we spoke of initially, is that you do not try to walk a life that you think will “get you into heaven”, but rather acknowledge you can’t walk such a life and indeed need a Savior. Your walk is to be in the Spirit living a life that pleases God by faith and aims to fulfill the desires of God’s heart for your life. Heavens gates are open to the family of God. You are born again in Christ and into the family of God the Father. Roms 8:14, tells us, “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” Salvation is primarily about what you become by being born again, which is a child of God, rather than anything you do either before or after this new birth occurs. Paul sums up the crux of the matter in his second letter to the Corinthian church. Chapter 13:5 reads, “Test yourself to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-unless indeed you fail the test?” In conclusion then, to be assured of eternal salvation on “your personal day of judgment”, you must throw aside everything you have ever done as being of no value to your salvation and ask yourself, “Have I responded to what Christ has done for me and accepted His gift and grace by becoming born again into Christ and the family of God?” R. Essential Oils For Healing And Therapy

By Lee Dobbins Essential oils are aromatic oils extracted from plants and have many therapeutic benefits. Essential oils are used to soothe the skin, heal cuts, eliminate pimples, help you relax, relieve digestive problems and even cure colds and flus. For therapeutic purposes, only the most pure oils will do. Unfortunately there are many companies out there selling low quality oils and you should only buy from a source that you trust. Like with anything else, you get what you get what you pay for so if an oil seems to be priced quite cheaply, its probably not a good quality oil for medicinal purposes. When using essential oils, its important to remember that these oils are strong and should not be applied directly to the skin. Mix them with base oils like almond or wheatgerm oil to reduce their potency. Essential Oils And Their Uses Lavender Perhaps the most popular of the essential oils, lavender has many uses. It is a great topical treatment which can help heal cuts, bruises and burns and is also a wonder aid to help you relax and can be a natural sleep inducer. Peppermint Peppermint oil is great for treating digestive complaints and may be used in preparations for freshening breath. Tea Tree and Eucalyptus These oils have long been used to treat a variety of respiratory ailments. These oils can be massaged into the chest or used in an oil burner and help relive congestion making them excellent oils to use for colds. Tea tree oil is also a natural antiseptic and can be dabbed on cuts, bites and stings. It can be used to treat spots and pimples and can be used to gargle but should never be swallowed. Geranium Geranium oil has been used for years as a pain reliever. Rosemary and Thyme Not only do these herbs taste good but they have wonderful antiseptic properties and can be good for healing problems with the skin. Citronella Citronella oil is a natural insect repellent so its no wonder they use it in the manufacture of oils and sprays as well as candles to repel insects. To protect your pet against fleas, try soaking his collar in citronella oil. To help keep down insects in summer, buy some citronella Geraniums and put the around your porch or deck. Garlic Garlic is another natural insect repellent and is vital in helping to keep your immune system healthy. It can be a great way to help prevent colds and viruses naturally. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. And it tastes good too! Patchouli This fragrant oil smells great when used in an oil burner but it is also a great topical treatment for eczema and dandruff. Ylang-ylang This is another fragrant oil that can be burned for its aroma, and is also reputed to relieve stress, palpitations and high blood pressure. Orange Oil Use this oil as an aroma therapy, it is reputed to help with depression and nervous tension. Cinnamon This tasty herb is becoming popular for many treatments but its great when used as an aroma therapy. Mix it with orange oil and youll have a wonderful homey smell in your house. As a topical oil, it is excellent for warts and viral infections. If you are really ambitious, you can grow these herbs yourself and collect the oil by stewing large amounts in pure water. Collect the steam and let it cool. The essential oils will rise to the top of the drained water and can be collected with an eyedropper. Or if you want a less labor intensive method, you can buy a product called a “flower still” which will help make the job easier. Career Success Through Engagement at Work

By Melanie Keveles Several years ago, a friend shared the story of a sojourner who came upon three individuals working with stone. Curious about what the workers were doing, the traveler approached the first worker and asked, What are you doing with these stones? Without hesitation the worker quickly responded, I am a stone cutter and I am cutting stones. Not satisfied with this answer, the traveler approached the second worker and asked the same question. The second worker paused for a moment and explained, I am a stone cutter and I am trying to make enough money to support my family. The sojourner then asked the third worker, What are you doing with these stones? The third worker stopped what he was doing, bringing his chisel to his side. Deep in thought, the worker slowly gazed toward the traveler and shared, I am a stone cutter and I am building a cathedral! This story has been told in many variations, yet it highlights the situation employers face each day in every organization: How are you going to engage your employees in their work so that they are intrinsically motivated? Worker engagement basics Seven years ago, The Gallup Organization created an opinion-based tool that identifies and measures elements of worker engagement most powerfully linked to improved business outcomes sales growth, productivity, customer loyalty, and more. To identify the elements of worker engagement, Gallup conducted hundreds of focus groups and thousands of worker interviews in all kinds of organizations, at all levels, in most industries and in many countries. From these inquiries, researchers pinpointed 12 key employee expectations that, when satisfied, form the foundation of strong feelings of engagement. The result was a 12-question survey in which employees rate their response on a scale of one to five. These are Gallups 12 questions, known as Q12: Do you know what is expected of you? Do you have the materials and equipment you need to do your work correctly? Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day? In the last week, have you received recognition or praise for doing good work? Does your supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about you as a person? Is there someone at work who encourages your development? Do your opinions seem to count? Does the mission/purpose of your company make you feel your job is important? Are your fellow employees committed to quality work? Do you have a best friend there? In the last six months, has someone at work talked to you about your progress? In the last year, have you had opportunities at work to learn and grow? While these questions may seem rather basic, Q12 has created quite a stir in the human resources community. Consider an environment in which an employee and his or her manager have discussed these questions. Just airing them provides an atmosphere of trust, open conversation and a forum for addressing issues directly that often impede productive work. Hiring for content and context There are two important factors in any job: the content of the work (what the employee does specifically) and the context in which this work is accomplished. Many employers hire for content, with much of the interview focused on whether or not the potential employee is capable of doing the activities that make up the majority of the job. Yet many potential employees come to the employment interview wondering whether this organization will provide a positive environment in which they can do their work. As organizations face their very survival today, whether an employee is engaged often gets put to the sidelines. However, nothing can be more important to the organization and the individuals within it. Companies using Gallups Q12 have seen a direct correlation between worker satisfaction and their bottom line. Engagement process requires employee, employer involvement It doesnt matter whether your organization has a formal program designed by Gallup. No matter who you are or where you are in the organization, you can begin to focus on the important issue of providing a meaningful work environment. Employee engagement requires both employer and employee involvement. As a manager, you can explore the questions underpinning Gallups Q12 with your team. A good way to set the stage for this discussion would be for all to read the book First Break All the Rules: What the Worlds Greatest Managers Do Differently, by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman. The authors are members of The Gallup Organization and have closely aligned their methods to Gallup research. If you would like to engage your manager in a discussion of improving the context in which you operate, raise the Q12 questions at an appropriate meeting time. You might even clip this article and put it on his or her desk with a note suggesting that you want to talk about these issues. It is time to confront bringing the greatest satisfaction and meaning to your work. Like that stone worker who sees his work as part of a much larger purpose, you can feel the satisfaction of leaving your mark every day in your job. Christmas Gifts for Couples

By Ross Bainbridge To a lot of people, Christmas means the giving and receiving of gifts. According to tradition often taught to children, gifts are brought for children by Santa Claus, who happens to be a pot bellied, happy guy with a long white beard and a sleigh pulled by reindeer. He is supposed to land on roofs of houses, slip down their chimneys and place the presents in stockings specially hung for this purpose, as well as under the tree. Once done, he then eats the food they leave for him. The rest of the year, he is supposed to be busy keeping a watch on the activities of children and supervising his elves, which make toys. Christmas is one of those times when couples buy each other gifts. There are a wide number and variety of gifts that couples can present each other. These gifts are sometimes traditional gifts like clothes, perfumes, and shaving kits. These gifts are always popular and make “safe” gifts. These gifts are always useful and can be chosen to fit tight budgets. For something a bit more special, some couples present gift experiences. These gift experiences involve presenting a day of action or relaxation. Days of action include gifts that allow the partner to spend a few hours doing something he or she has always dreamed of, like driving a Formula 1 racing car or piloting an aircraft, for example. Days of relaxation include days spent sleeping, resting, and recuperating in a luxury spa or resort where every wish, whim, and fancy is taken care of by a team of people. These packages are sometimes perfect weekend getaways for couples. They involve various types of massages, workouts in gyms, saunas, Jacuzzis, games of tennis, or just sleeping the entire day. There are other unique gifts that can be presented like land on the moon or Mars or gifting the partner a copy of the newspaper published on the day he or she was born. Hitler Was A Choir Boy Compared To The Coming Final Dictator Who Is This Man

By Michael Bresciani Antichrist has no interest or connection to any religion or the occult. He largely worships himself as most megalomaniacs do. He is a political and military genius who is deeply involved with the propagation of his own agenda. That agenda will be the implementation of an entirely new economic system that will sweep the globe. It will be accepted in all quarters of the world and will be geo-politically pervasive. Most of the world will get onboard his new economic ship without flinching. Some nations will be dragged in kicking and screaming, but all will be a part of it. His system will shoot up as himself like a flaming rocket but will last only between three and one half to seven years. Who is this man and how can we identify him? Here are some gleanings out of the Bible that show us what we should be looking for. It should be noted that a deeply rebellious and secular world will be looking for this man very carefully as well. They on the other hand will see him as everything the world really needs at that moment. Not possible you say? Consider the post World War One people of Germany. They were humiliated, beaten and looking for a leader to pull them not just up, but up and over all the other people of the world; enter Adolph Hitler Traits, attributes and general personality characteristics of the antichrist He has no interest in women in general. Some people believe he may be gay because of this. I believe he has no time for women because he is altogether too busy either wielding power or focusing on himself. Daniel 11:37 He is vicious and self serving and violently uproots his rivals and political opponents. Daniel 7: 20-24 He is enamored with himself and the sense of his own self importance. He could easily he considered as the king of megalomaniacs. Daniel 7:lf, Revelation 13: If, 2 Thessalonians 2: 3-4 He has trouble speaking without blaspheming God, the people of God and anything connected to God. He is a prolific boaster of his own brilliance and self worth. Daniel 7:lf Revelation 13:lf He has only disdain for most commonly established civil laws of man, or moral laws of God. He attempts to change most of the rules and ignores the ones he chooses not to regard. He gives new definition to the word recalcitrant. Daniel 7:20-24 Things the antichrist will do during the inaugural or first part of his rise to power. He makes a pact with the Jewish people and the apostate church this would be something of a protection agreement. He doesnt keep the agreement but it looks good to the rest of the world. Daniel 9:27 He gains the full support of another powerful figure called the false prophet. This man is from an entirely different nation and is probably a political figure or at the least a minister of science. The false prophet does some dazzling tricks and signs, but passes the glory or the respect from those who are awed by his spectacularisms over to the antichrist. The false prophet is singularly his most powerful ally. Revelation 13:11-15 He is a class act in every way and gains the respect and admiration of the whole world. He draws them through his astounding abilities, his striking appearance and by the help of demon spirits sent throughout the world to win the hearts of his adoring admirers. Revelation 13:3f He blocks, or uproots either his rising opponents or those who are already in power. Daniel 7:20-24 The Omen movies and those like it are not accurate except in one way. There will be a final demon driven ruler over the whole world before the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Hollywood crowd has never been known for much accuracy in anything and there is little reason to trust them on the subject of Antichrist. It will not be the few in his little inner circle that will adore and blindly obey this last worst dictator but rather it will be almost everyone in the entire world. Those who refuse to follow him will be slaughtered like cattle. But cattle they are not. They are still known as martyrs and their blood is precious to the Lord. Their reward and crown will be far above others in the coming Kingdom. Rev Bresciani has written many articles over the past thirty years in such periodicals as Guideposts and Catholic Digest. He is the author of two books available on Amazon.com, Alibris, Barnes and Noble and many other places. Rev Bresciani wrote Hook Line and Sinker or what has Your Church Been Teaching You, publisher, PublishAmerica of Baltimore MD. He also wrote a book published by Xulon Press entitled An American Prophet and His Message, Questions and Answers on the Second Coming of Christ. His book is now being heralded as the clearest book on the subject of the second coming of Christ since Hal Lindsey’s “Late Great Planet Earth” Rev Brescianis website is, http://americanprophet.org Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_Bresciani http://EzineArticles.com/?Hitler-Was-A-Choir-Boy-Compared-To-The-Coming-Final-Dictator—Who-Is-This-Man&id=202938 is there a generic form of ambien zolpidem off shore ambien price boards chongqed interaction carbamazepine zolpidem

The Design Psycho Learns to Relax

By Jeanette Joy Fisher Our family home in Palatka, Florida was a grand Victorian dream that we salvaged from spiders and neglect. Our Victorian Lady featured a fabulous dining room, complete with twelve-foot high ceilings, ornate carved fireplace, and a ten-by-eight foot antique mirror. Furnishings included a pump organ, an English side table, a huge triple-tiered wrought iron chandelier, and an antique banquet table with twelve chairs. We wallpapered the dining room ceiling with a faux-tin pattern, and then painted it a glossy forest green to reflect shimmers of candlelight. An Anaglypta border (thick, embossed wall covering), painted rouge red, framed frescoed plaster walls that were layered in transparent ambers, creams, and a hint of pink. The dining chairs and antique overstuffed reading chairs matched the fabric window dressings that framed the huge water-color-effect leaded windows. The undulating fabric pattern tied together all the colors we’d chosen to enhance our dining delight. The gentle swags, imitating nature’s motifs, had been selected to make us feel relaxed and connected to Mother Earth. Embellishments to the chandelier included huge red and amber crystals that we’d uncovered in an antique-junk shop and mini shades. I had spray-painted the shades black with gold-gilded interiors. The elegant room, dressed in its finery on a budget, was the setting for our nightly family dining, because it offered the only place to sit and eat together in the house. One evening, as I prepared for guests, I got out my string, to make sure that the table, now beautifully set with turkey and all the trimmings, was aligned perfectly with the center of the chandelier. My children laughed at my obsession, but helped hold the string while I measured to make sure the table was correctly centered. We met our friends on the front porch as they arrived, and then migrated to our perfectly-arranged dining room, where our magnificently-staged table was waiting. But as we walked into the dining room, we found our beloved golden retriever, standing at attention in the middle of the table, after having devoured our feast. No one noticed that the table was sitting in the exact center of the room. Creating a fabulous dining room for your family and guests deserves careful planning. Design your eating space using colors that enhance taste, small patterns mimicking nature, and soft textures to counter hard surfaces. Remember, the most important ingredient, the people, deserve a fine backdrop. And, feed your pets first! Resentment - The Bite That Holds On

By Helene Rothschild Lindsay gazed at the floor as she gently wiped the tears that were trickling down her wet cheeks. As the forty-two-year-old woman composed herself, she was able to renew eye contact with her husband, Charles, whose eyes were also filled with sadness. They were sitting opposite each other, and sharing their long-seated resentments. Lindsay and Charles did not want a divorce, and were committed to improving their relationship. They had also come to the realization that their upsets were affecting their three children. At our first couple counseling session, Lindsay and Charles expressed to me the many problems they had been struggling with during most of the twenty-two years of their marriage. Upon further exploration, it was apparent to me that Lindsay and Charles loved each other deeply. They had the same values and similar interests. Each of them had respect for the other, and adored their three children. They were also very active in their community. Since they never argued in public, no one but one close friend knew about their unhappiness. Lindsay and Charles were attractive, well groomed, and financially successful. They were able to fool the community, but not themselves-at least not anymore. Their marriage was in trouble, and Lindsay and Charles could not run away from their reality anymore. Everything came to a head when their teenage son, Ricky, was having problems in school. Besides not attending classes, Ricky was caught smoking marijuana in the boys’ locker room. During their meeting with the principal, he had suggested that Lindsay and Charles seek family counseling. The principal was wise to know that the children often act out the pain of the family. He understood that even though Ricky was responsible for his actions, the solutions to his problems involved more than himself. The entire unit, his family, needed some resolutions. When Lindsay and Charles called me for an appointment, I indicated that I wanted them to bring in the entire family for the first session. Once I understood how they reacted to each other, and what the problems were, I asked Ricky to come in for a few individual sessions. Then it was time to work with the parents who are the foundation for their family unit. During the couple counseling session I said, “Lindsay and Charles, resentments are like bites that hold on. They keep you separate, and block your love feelings. No matter how spiritual, intelligent, or loving you are, it is important to resolve your resentments so that you can be close.” I told them that they were unique but their problems were not. In the course of counseling many couples, I found that the lack of love was rarely the problem. However, hidden resentments caused many bad feelings, and covert or overt conflicts. Both Lindsay and Charles had a tendency to withhold their upsets. Therefore, their home atmosphere was relatively quiet, with only infrequent outbursts of anger that were not long-lasting. However, there were lots of covert expressions of anger by way of withdrawal of affection, avoidance of each other, and subtle sarcasm. Because Lindsay and Charles avoided expressing their feelings, their relationship had become more like roommates than an intimate couple. Their children, to their surprise, were subconsciously sensitive to the negative undercurrent, and were feeling upset. Typical of young people, although it is totally illogical, they subconsciously felt responsible for their parents’ pain. At this point, Charles and Lindsay began to understand how their unfinished business with each other was affecting their marriage and their family. Scared but highly motivated, they were willing to do a clearing process. I first suggested to them that they tell each other the following, “I love you, and I never meant to hurt you. I also understand that you never purposely did anything to cause me pain. I want to be close to you. Therefore, I’m going to share my resentments with you so that I can release them. Please just listen to my upsets. Let’s learn from our mistakes and forgive each other.” After Charles and Lindsay repeated those healing words, they felt ready to unload their hidden “baggage.” I asked Lindsay to express a specific resentment in one sentence by beginning with the words, “I resent(ed) when you…” Then I asked Charles to repeat back what he heard in his own words. If Lindsay felt satisfied that Charles had listened and understood her resentment, we switched roles, and Charles went on to share his withhold. Both Charles and Lindsay felt sad as they were reliving those painful times. They were surprised to hear about incidents that had happened early in their marriage, over twenty years ago. They were even more amazed when they realized how those upsets were still affecting them in the present. Releasing their resentments in this constructive way helped them to feel a great sense of relief. The “bite” was finally letting go. The withholds, the unfinished business, that were keeping them separate, were finally being removed. At the end of the session, Charles and Lindsay admitted that they were feeling vulnerable, but also much closer to each other. They rose from their chairs, smiled, and lovingly hugged each other. The couple knew that they had more work to do, but they were confident that they were on their way to having the fulfilling relationship they deeply desired.
